Laureate 2024

The CALQ jury highlighted the relevance of the theme of anorexia nervosa, approached with rare depth in the solo, Thin. With Krump as a choreographic language, Valérie “Taminator” Chartier evokes the physical and mental battle she waged for years. The fusion of hip-hop and contemporary dance in this piece brings a new dimension to Quebec dance.

The precision of the movements adds strength to the story being told without compromising on technique. The artist succeeds in raising public awareness of a little-known, yet very present reality, particularly among dancers with classical ballet backgrounds. Thin makes a lasting impression, resonating with spectators for a long time to come. Valérie “Taminator” Chartier has established herself as a leader in the Krump movement, while actively campaigning for recognition of the arts related to hip-hop culture in Quebec.

Dancer and choreographer

Valérie “Taminator” Chartier has over 40 years of dance experience in ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, waacking, and Krump. A female Krump pioneer in Canada and an internationally recognized leader in her community, Valérie is the executive director of the Montreal Krump Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Krump through educational and artistic platforms.

Instigator of the LeadHers program dedicated to the development of young women’s physical and mental potential through Krump, she invests as much in teaching and mentoring as in creating and performing, organizing events, and participating in international “battles” as a guest or judge. Her solo, Thin, an autobiographical work that integrates cello into the Krump world, was presented at MAI (Montréal, art interculturels) and Tangente. “Taminator” also took part in season 3 of the TVA dance competition, Révolution, and is now the Krump ambassador for the Regroupement québécois de la danse.
